Research Node 2: Languages and Literacies

The "Languages and Literacies" research node is developing strategies for producing and using AI tools that recognize diverse language groups and facilitate critical AI literacies for more equitable futures. Large language models (LLMs) and generative AI writing tools have the potential to increase educational outcomes. However, if we do not grapple with questions about which languages are used as foundations for computational models, how AI tools are incorporated into educational and professional contexts, and which publics are authorized to speak up, then these AI tools are likely to increase social disparities rather than reduce them. This CAIEF node examines language diversity and representational biases in the creation and use of LLMs, as well as practices for critical AI literacy, focusing on equity-driven pedagogy and public-engagement efforts that attend to community needs.
