Understanding how AI and LLMs interpret and model the universe is crucial to assessing the benefits, limits, and risks of these technologies and knowing when and how to use them effectively. This non-technical, conceptual workshop presents the fundamentals of how current AI and Large Lange Models (LLM) model “meaning” and the architectures behind the most widely deployed AI methods and platforms. Topics covered will include: Introduction to the “theory of mind” that lead to the development of Transformer models (the basis of LLMs); understanding how the models themselves capture, store, and canonize meaning; and a review of the various computational processes and workflows that mediate interaction (both query and content generation) with the models to allow humans and software agents to interact with them. This workshop will focus on achieving a conceptual understanding of the topics covered. As such, no coding experience or prior experience with AI is required. The workshop is suitable both for those involved in the deployment of AI systems and prompt-based users of AI systems.
